The Queen of Costume Jewellery Immortalised in a New Film

It seems we are being spoilt with fashion films at the moment – first Baz Luhrman confirmed that the Great Gatsby was being shown at Cannes and now a new film about Coco Chanel is set to be made starring Kiera Knightley as the fashion designer. However, perhaps more excitingly it's to be directed by the current head of Chanel – one Mr Karl Lagerfeld. The short film is to celebrate the fashion house's centenary and here at MizEllie we'll be looking forward to the fashions (not least because Knightley's films are always a fashion feast) because let's face it Chanel was a pioneer of her  time. Without her women may not have started wearing trousers (she helped engineer a move away from corsets and long skirts) while she also brought us the two-piece suit, the LBD and off course a favourite here at MizEllie –costume and fashion jewellery.

Coco Chanel believed that every woman should have beautiful jewellery regardless of their income. She was never seen without stacks of gorgeous pearls and loved a bit of fake bling. In fact she thought that women should have lots of costume jewellery rather than a few expensive pieces so that every outfit could be accessorised to look fab - just one reason while we love Coco Chanel.

What’s more costume and fashion jewellery inspired by Chanel is still relevant today as it was back then.  While her clothes embodied chic sophistication with elegant and simple lines while her jewellery was almost the exact opposite - she loved a good bit of bling!

She loved pearls and was hardly ever seen with seen without strings of pearls around her neck while she was also a bit of a fan of brightly colored “fruit salad glass” stones, which was aimed to imitate precious stones, on necklaces and earrings for women. She was also a big fan of gold chains (just think of the handle of the famous quilted bags). Another key motif is the famous Chanel bow which was a trademark in her designs and also in her jewellery. So simple bow shapes were used on necklaces, ring and earrings for women. And lets not forget -her favourite flower, the Camellia and this was used a design trend in her clothes and her jewellery. While another big influence on the French designer was the sky with the sun, stars and comets making their way into her jewellery designs so these are all motifs that can be copied today.

There is something truly timeless about Chanel designs and her views on costume and fashion jewellery is something that we at MizEllie can relate to.

At MizEllie we have loads of Chanel style pieces with bow motifs, faux pearl necklaces and earrings for women all of which Coco Chanel would be proud to wear.

Do you love the look of Chanel jewellery? Do you think the work of Coco Chanel is timeless? Why not let us know what you think in the comments section.
