How To Clean Turquoise Fashion Jewellery

Since both real and artificial turquoise needs to be maintained to help it last longer, you’ll need to clean your turquoise jewellery periodically, no matter which kind it is. You’ll just need to be extra-careful with the real thing, since some polishes or even rough cloth can damage the finish or the colour.

Essentially you start off the same way: Clean the metal bits separately from the stones.
Use a silver polishing cloth to clean the silver parts of the jewelry; if the setting isn’t silver, use a very dilute solution of water and dishwashing soap on a soft cloth. Do not touch the turquoise with the either the polishing cloth or the cloth with detergent. Wipe off the metal components, then wipe again with a clean damp cloth. Air-dry on a dry towel.

Moving on to the turquoise itself: Use a jewelry cleaning brush or a soft toothbrush with plain water to clean the stones; dry each piece of turquoise with a soft, dry cloth. Then let the jewelry air dry out of direct sunlight before putting it away in a jewellery box or cloth bag. Never soak turquoise in water because the settings and the stone itself can de-stabilize and lose its colour. Both the stones and the settings can scratch easily; therefore keep them wrapped separately from other jewellery, and don’t wear them while exercising or doing other rigorous activities.

Bear in mind that some jewelers recommend not using water at all on turquoise if possible – it’s that sensitive. When washing these stones, even the fashion costume jewellery type, use the barest minimum of water possible – really, just a faintly damp cloth – and treat it gently!
