The Chelsea Flower Show Comes To Your Wardrobe

The Chelsea flower show comes to your wardrobe

It's the highlight of the gardening calendar and the RHS Chelsea Flower show seems to herald the start of summer. What's more there has been a strange yellow disc we like to call the sun in the sky in recent days so now is the perfect time to introduce some floral charm into your wardrobe.

Florals and summer seem to go hand in hand and with the perfect inspiration in the form of the award winning gardens at Chelsea why not try to introduce some blooms into your style. However, just because you are adding florals into your wardrobe doesn't mean that you need to go all chintzy and grannyish. Instead, floral looks can be brought bang up to date with a few key looks.

Go big and bold

On the spring/summer 2013 catwalks floral designs were everywhere but is wasn't the small chintzy designs that were available it was big and bold designs that stole the limelight.  From the gorgeous Prada daisy prints which took fashion editors by storm to the pretty cut out floral designs at Valentino there was a range of great yet bold floral designs.

Head to toe florals

A lot of the runways at the Spring/summer 2013 catwalks had head to toe floral designs. The look is perfect for summer weddings but if you are going for head to toe florals it may be a good idea to go for a slightly smaller print as this is more flattering then a big bold print - it is also a more versatile way of channelling the trend.

Think about fabrics

So think summery cottons and silks or why not a pretty lace with a floral design. The fabrics you choose can make or break your floral outfit as you want to look and feel comfortable but also you will look great at the same time.

Accessorise

If head to toe florals aren't your thing a perfect way to get a bit of Chelsea style is with some great accessories. Things like flirty women's scarves and great costume jewellery will add a touch of floral glamour without feeling too chintzy or ditzy.

Birds and Flowers £9.00            Patterned Flower Scarf £8.00           Roses Scarf   £8.00

A floral silk scarf can be a versatile addition to your wardrobe as you could wear it round your
neck for work or why not channel the Great Gatsby and wear it as a head piece. While costume jewellery in floral designs can look fab and will make you feel like you have come straight off the catwalk.

Fashion Legend Missoni Dies

It's been a sad week in the world of fashion with the news that one of the founders of the great Italian fashion house, Missoni, has died.  Ottavio Missoni died recently at the age of 92 - he co-founded the fashion house with his wife Rosita in 1953. Also known as Tai he and his wife's label became known for its colourful knits and zigzag patterns and here and MizEllie we love their distinctive style.

So how was the famous fashion brand born? Well Rosita and Tai started out with just a few knitting machines making designs for other labels. So the first Missoni collection didn’t appear until 1958 with two of the striped dresses they created being sold in Milan stores. However, in 1963 the now famous zigzag lightweight knits were born. By 1966 they had created their first fashion show, having caught the eye of US Vogue editor Anna Piaggi, but in 1967 they caused a frenzy when the models bare breasts were shown up by the camera bulbs of the photographers. This was because the model’s bra straps could be seen through the models lame tops so they were ordered to remove them causing the scandal!

During the 70s the brand grew in popularity - with their designs championed by Vogue’s then editor Diana Vreeland they opened their first boutiques one in Bloomingdales and one in Milan.  Their bright intricate zigzags, waves, multicolour stripes, checks and patchwork were perfect for the feel of the 1970s and meant that women could mix, and maybe not match as such, their boldest and most daring patterns. Thanks to Missoni it became acceptable to wear a striped skirt with a bold chequerboard jacket and patchwork neckscarves.

Potty Dot Scarf £8.00                 Butterfly Scarf £18.00                Frilly Garland Scarf £12.00

The design duo worked perfectly together with Tai working on the colours and Rosita turning them into easy to wear clothes. And now the company archives includes an eye watering 7,000 designs of stripes, zigzags, tartans, patchworks and mélanges in a variety of stunning fabrics. And thanks to Tai and Rosita’s hard work the brand has now grown to be a global phenomenon with a number of celebrity followers including the ever fashionable and stylish Duchess of Cambridge.

If you want to pay tribute to Missoni then you need to embrace bright colours and patterns and don’t be afraid to mix patterns together as that will encompass the Missoni ethic. One perfect way to pay tribute to the Missoni label is with women’s scarves. Look for bright and bold colours and patterns like stripes, zigzags even tartans and chequerboards to nail the look.

Sweet Bohemian Scarf £12.00             Silk Chiffon Scarf £13.00          Peacock Scarf £12.00

Bright and bold neck scarves from MizEllie will be the perfect way of channelling that iconic Missoni look and a great way of paying tribute to a great legend in the fashion world - Tai Missoni.

Fashion Goes Punk: MizEllie's Guide To the Met Ball

It's arguably the biggest fashion night of the year – a time when the great and good of the fashion world get together to celebrate the world of fashion.  Every year the Costume Institute Gala at the Met (or the Met Ball as it is also known) picks a theme to celebrate and this year it was all about punk.

Never one to miss an opportunity to see what the celebs are wearing, at MizEllie we have spent the last few days looking through some of the hits and misses (Kim Kardashian we are looking at you here) of the Met ball.  And while there were some loose, to say least, interpretations of the punk theme, as always fashions finest put on a great show. So what can we learn from fashion's big night out?

Sometimes more is more

If there is one person who always likes to go the extra mile with her fashion sense it has to be pop princess Katy Perry who once again wowed with her bling style.

She turned up to the Met Ball wearing a crown – and not just any crown, she wore a headpiece suitable for the Tudor court itself. Her earrings were massive gold crosses – inspired by a catwalk trend where earrings for women certainly made a statement – a trend Ms Perry certainly followed!

Meanwhile, Sex and the City star and ultimate fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker took the punk theme to heart wearing a Giles Deacan ball gown, tartan over-the knee boots and even a bejewelled Philip Treacy Mohican headpiece.

Safety pins and studs can still look high fashion

The punk theme meant that a number of stars decided to pay homage to some of its most iconic looks – studs and safety pins but of course with a high fashion twist.

Designer Donatella Versace had studded shoulders and wore a studded cuff with her gown, while model of the moment Cara Delavigne wore a stunning V-neck Burberry gown with studded details on the top. Stacey Keibler showed how to do sexy punk with her studded Rachel Roy mini dress.

Meanwhile Carey Mulligan, star of the Great Gatsby, accessorised her gorgeous Balenciaga cocktail dress with chic safety pin jewellery and Zooey Deschanel carried a kooky clutch bag with a safety pin motif.

And another big punk motif from the night was the number of crosses seen on display. From pendant necklaces seen on the likes of Mary-Kate Olsen, to earrings seen on Katy Perry and Emilia Clarke, the cross motif alongside safety pins and studs added a punk twist to high fashion. So while there were very few true punk fashions through the use of jewellery and accessories there were a number of high fashion homages paid to the fashion movement.

Nail Transitional Dressing with MizEllie This Summer

There has been an unusual sight in the sky in recent weeks – the sun. The weather has started to take a turn and that means we all need to manage the tricky art of transitional dressing. This is not an easy task because it's a little warm for big thick winter jumpers and yet not the right weather for summery dresses and shorts. So how can you tackle the tricky art of transitional dressing? Well, here at MizEllie we have the perfect guide to managing the changes in seasonal dressing.

Layer up

The first thing to master when it comes to transitional dressing is to work your layers. A pretty summer dress can be worn with tights and jackets and cardigans so that when it gets warmer you can quickly and easily strip back the layers. So investing in things like a gorgeous blazer and keeping your winter boots out will mean that you will be able to cope well whatever, the weather.

Another great tip is to take inspiration from Emma Stone by wearing a t-shirt under a summery dress or why not take another trend from Ms Stone by wearing over the knee boots with a bright summer skirt? That way you will look appropriate whatever the weather decides to throw at us.

Pick the right outerwear

OK so you don't want to walk out and about in a thick and heavy winter coat, but it is Britain after all so you are going to need some kind of coat (especially as it will rain in this country). At MizEllie we love the trend for 1960s style parkas and biker style leather jackets – that way if you are caught in a shower you will still look uber stylish.

Things like cashmere scarves are going to be your new best friend this spring. At MizEllie we love the versatility of women's scarves because you can throw them into your bag and use them to add a bit of warmth if you are hit by a cold snap and of course still look stylish while you are at it. For some reason the addition of a gorgeous cashmere scarf will add warmth to your outfit without making you feel that you are too bundled up and too wintery.

So you may not be able to go for full out beach wear and let's face it who wants to trudge through puddles in flip flops. However, just because it may not be right to wear full-on summer outfits doesn't mean you can't have a summery twist on your look. Here is where accessories and jewellery are an important part of your wardrobe. By introducing bright colours and summery accessories into your wardrobe, you will feel summery but still weather appropriate at the same time.  Even something as simple as wearing a floral or bright scarf can take your outfit from winter to summer.

MizEllie's Guide To Summer Trends

So after a sunny bank holiday at MizEllie we are feeling rather summery and this means that we are of course planning our key summer wardrobes and if you want to update your wardrobe one way could be with chic neck scarves. They are incredibly versatile for the summer months as they can be used as an extra layer for when the weather gets a little colder, they can be worn round the neck for a chic retro look or worn in the hair (silk scarves are perfect for this) or even tied round a handbag. So what key looks should you be channelling this summer?

Florals

OK so Summer and florals do go hand in hand and this season is no different. What's more a number of celebrities have been seen sporting the trend. From Kelly Brook, to MIC's Millie Mackintosh, Gemma Arterton and even the Duchess of Cambridge florals have been a key summer look.  Florals were also a key trend on the spring/summer 2013 catwalks with Dolce & Gabbana, Simone Rocha, Moschino and Erdem all showing off bold floral prints.

What's more it is a great trend to interpret with neck scarves, particularly silk scarves.  A scarf in a pretty floral pattern will add a lot to a summer wardrobe.

Butterfly and Flowers £9.00       Sheer Roses Scarf £8.00   Frilly Flowing Scarf £15.00

Monochrome

If florals aren't your thing then why not try one of the other key trends of summer – monochrome. Seen on the likes of Kate Middleton, Kim Kardashian, Jessica Alba, Nicole Richie, and Naomi Watts monochrome is every where at the moment.  What's more not only was it seen on a number of celebs it is also an incredibly fashion forward look with a number of autumn/winter catwalks so you will be a true fashionista by donning a monochrome silk scarf.

Patterns

When it comes to patterns this summer there are plenty of options to choose from as a number of spring/summer from stripes to chequerboard as well as polka dots there were loads of patterns on display on the catwalks. So you can really go to town with patterns this summer and a perfect way to do that is with neck scarves as you can add a new look without having to go for head to toe patterns.

Animal Print Scarf £8.00                 Vintage Lace Stole £21.00

Pastel

OK so pastels for summer isn't exactly revolutionary but it is once again a big look this summer. So much so that the spring/summer 2013 runways Erdem, Christopher Kane, Michael Van Der Ham, Corrie Neilsen, Meadham Kirchhoff, Emilia Wickstead, Mulberry, and later Antonio Marras, Fendi, Ports 1961, Prada, Sonia Rykiel, Viktor & Rolf and Valentino all showcased pastels in various colours.

Pretty pastel colours are the perfect way to add a bit of summer to even the most neutral wardrobe and of course a perfect silk scarf in a lilac, rose pink, spearmint or blue will be a great addition to your wardrobe.
