Get Liz Taylor’s glam style with MizEllie

Think of a Hollywood superstar and you will probably think of Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor is the epitome of glamour and style and she is back on the fashion radar once again with the recent Burton and Taylor drama showing on the BBC and if there is one thing we can learn from her is that diamonds really are a girl’s best friend.

Equally famous for her jewellery collection as for her tumultuous love affair with Richard Burton Taylor’s collection of jewels was legendary, here at MizEllie we were certainly in love with her look. So what can we learn from the first lady of Hollywood?

You can never have too much bling

If there is one thing Liz Taylor was never afraid off is wearing too much bling. She loved a sparkling diamond or gemstone and when it came to her jewellery collection more was definitely more.  Nothing summarises the trend more than the Krupp diamond ring. Back in 1968 Richard Burton bought her the ring spending huge amounts of money on the massive diamond and it was a piece that Taylor cherished a lot claiming that it had an “indescribable charm”. But the most famous gem Taylor ever owned has to be the Taylor-Burton Diamond which is a gorgeous 69.42-carat pear-shaped diamond that Burton purchased at auction for over $1 million which she had set into a necklace by Cartier and is simply stunning.

However, while her jewellery was always glam and a bit bling it was always of a classic design which was extremely elegant. So think beautiful chandelier earrings for women and great pendant necklaces with a pearl or diamante detail and you can’t go far wrong. The aim is to channel that Hollywood star look of the 1950s and not go too TOWIE with your jewellery look.

Walk like an Egyptian

Taylor’s most famous film has to be Anthony and Cleopatra, and it was on the set of the film that she met Richard Burton who she would later marry not once but twice, and one way of channelling the trend has to be with costume and fashion jewellery. Think fabulous gold necklaces and hairpieces for a true Queen of the Nile look.  A great modern way of getting the look is with statement chokers in gold and coloured stones. Or you could go for golden tone earrings while statement looks such as the scarab screams ancient Egypt.

At MizEllie we know you don’t quite have the budget of Elizabeth Taylor but that doesn't mean you can’t wear stunning jewellery like her. We have a great range of costume and fashion jewellery which even Ms Taylor would be proud to wear.

What was your favourite Elizabeth Taylor look? Do you think her style will ever go out of fashion? Why not let her know in the comments section below.

Fashion has a rosy outlook this autumn/winter

OK we know we are in the middle of a heatwave and summer is in full swing but that doesn’t mean that it’s too early to start thinking about what to wear next season. The autumn/winter catwalks were full of great design inspiration but there was one trend that really caught our eye for next season – pretty pink hues. There is something quite fun and flirty about cute girly pinks and what’s more it is a really versatile colour so whatever your colouring you can get away with it. So how should you wear pink this autumn/winter or even get ahead of the fashion curve this year?

One of the big trends on the autumn/winter catwalks was a womanly allure and head to toe pink is a great way of channelling that trend. Seen on the catwalks of Lanvin, Nina Ricci, Jonathan Saunders, Armani, Christian Dior and Miu Miu, to name just a  few, pink is the perfect way to brighten up even the darkest winter days and will add a splash of colour to even the dullest outfit.

How to wear it?

The great thing about pink is it is such a versatile colour as you can either wear it head to toe or as an accent colour. You could take inspiration from Lanvin and Nina Ricci and wear it a gorgeous rose tinted cocktail dress – and what’s more you will stand out in a sea of Little Black Dresses which is always good.

Another fabulous take on the trend was seen at Celine, Miu Miu and Mulberry where the models went down the catwalk in amazing winter coats which made us want to head straight out and buy a fab pink coat and what’s more it makes a change from our usual wintery hued coats. In fact here at MizEllie we reckon it would cheer us up just too look at a great pink coat.

If pale roses and pinks aren’t your style then that doesn’t mean you can’t channel the trend instead look to Jonathan Saunders for inspiration where he teamed a red pencil skirt with a pink jumper which is a more grown up take on the look. Or why not try Simone Rocha’s version of the trend where there were two piece suits in a bright pink almost coral colour. If you want to just put touches of pink into your autumn wardrobe then you can’t go far wrong teaming it with soft greys and blacks.

However, if there is one catwalk look that we lusted after it was at Miu Miu where the models were wearing spotty neck scarves with their outfits. The coloured women’s scarves broke up the all pink outfits and added a chic yet edgy look to the ensemble – we loved it.

At MizEllie we have a fab range of pink costume and fashionjewellery as well as scarves which can means you can start channelling the trend now – so why wait?

Revamping your summer wardrobe without having to buy more clothes

With the recent heatwave we can officially say summer is here - but if your summers are anything like ours at MizEllie that means a full social calendar of fun events and parties. However, that can also lead to problems as a season full of parties means your wardrobe has to work very hard or you face a massive clothes bill. So how can you ensure you look your best this summer without having to spend a fortune on new clothes?

Well at MizEllie we aim to make your life easier and of course more fashionable so we have a guide to making your wardrobe work harder.

Create a capsule wardrobe

It's a really good idea to have a bit of a clear out first and assess what you have got. The aim is to have a capsule wardrobe with a few key pieces that will never go out of fashion and work well together. Once you have got this together you can add in a couple of seasonal pieces to make it look like your wardrobe is evolving without costing too much.

Work those separates

Dresses are great and are perfect for occasion wear. However, it can be hard to make it look different each time you wear it. Therefore, consider building some of your party looks around a few key separates as a pair of black trousers or a pencil skirt, for example, will look different each time you wear it all you need to do is mix up the top. So if you are worried about being spotted in the same outfit twice make separates your best friend as they can be used in a variety of ways and will always look different. They are also the perfect summer holiday wardrobe saviour.

Don't forget to accessorise

Good accessories can instantly transform an outfit – whether it is great costume jewellery, a silk scarf, a fab handbag or great shoes they are a perfect and inexpensive way to mix up your look. What's more the recent trend for bold statement jewellery can really work in your favour as it will provide a memorable focal point for even the plainest outfits. So teaming a bold statement necklace or pair of chandelier earrings will mean that they are the pieces that get noticed and not the fact you are wearing the same dress you wore two weeks ago.  What's more the style of your fashion jewellery will change the whole feel of your outfit.  Long pendants will add a bohemian vibe to your look while a bold bib style necklace will add an edgy feel – perfect for mixing up your look. The same goes for shoes and handbags as these simple items can really revamp your look with not much effort.

Chunky pearl's are my world                                      Boho Aqua Jewel                                         Flower Leaf statement
                 necklace £18.00                                              vintage earring £4.00                                       Necklace £13.00

Step back in time to the 90s this summer

It seems that every past decade has seen a fashion revival in recent years and now it seems it is the turn of the 1990s that is in the spotlight. With the likes of Henry Holland and Topshop as well as bands like Little Mix championing the 90s look never has the decade been more in style.

In fact the band have said in interviews that the characters like Kelly Kapowski from Saved by the Bell and Hillary Banks from the Fresh Prince of Bell-Air were all style icons of theirs – a glowing endorsement of 90s fashion if ever there were.  But what looks should you take from the 90s to make your own?

Tie-dye and neon brights

Anyone who lived through the 90s will remember global hypercolour t-shirts, tie-dye and neon brights (you only have to look at Saved by the Bell to see how popular neon's were). However, the look now is some what more pared down but that said bright colours are definitely having a fashion moment. If you want to wear the look though make sure that you don't go for head to toe tie-dye or neon brights as it can be a little overpowering.  However, a graphic print tee or tie-dye tee in neon colours will be a perfect way of getting that 90s feel into your outfit.

However, one great way to channel the trend is with great accessories so think bright and bold fashion and costume jewellery with big and bright stones. Or why not try women's scarves in a bright colour – and by wearing it as a hair band you will look perfect for the summer and channel the 90s trend.  Because scarves for women are so versatile you will have a nod to the trend without going over the top – what's not to love!

Multicolour Retro Woven Heart Earrings £3.00
 Tropical Breeze Floral Scarf £8.00

Acid and stonewash jeans

Another key 90s trend is acid and stonewash jeans and in fact in some ways the paler the better. So now is the time to put those dark wash jeans to the back of the wardrobe and get out the lighter style jeans and they are perfect to pair with neon brights. Better still get some ripped jeans and you will look like you have come straight out if the 90s.

Crop tops

OK this may be only for those with the flattest stomach but crop tops are certainly having a bit of a fashion moment, especially with the likes of Rihanna, Jessie J and Little Mix all wearing crop tops if you can pull it off it is definitely the perfect look to go for.

Grunge

Think Johnny Depp and Kate Moss from their 90s heyday – so go for slightly big and baggy looks with a slight unkempt feel to it but still uber stylish.

At MizEllie we have a perfect range of costume and fashionjewellery in bright and bold 90s styles or women's scarves which are perfect for channelling the 90s trend.

Will you be wearing the 90s look this summer? Who is your favourite fashion icon from the decade? Why not let us know in the comments section below.

How to look chic as the mother of the bride this wedding season

With wedding season in full swing a number of people across the country are working out what they need to wear for all those weddings, but if there is one person who is probably the most nervous it has to be the Mother of the Bride.  The thing about being Mother of the Bride is that all eyes are on her but while she wants to look her best she also wants to make sure that she doesn't upstage her daughter. So how can you navigate this big day while still looking your best?

Pick the right colour

It is really important to go for the right colour scheme to your outfit. The idea is that you complement the colour scheme of the bridal party without looking like you are trying to be one of the bridesmaids. So pick a colour that matches and the colour scheme but is just different enough.

Be comfortable

Your daughter's wedding is a long and busy day so you need to make sure you are comfortable – can you spend 12 hours in your outfit and will you be too hot or too cold and will you feel the need to change half way through the day? Therefore, make sure you feel entirely comfortable in your outfit as you won't want to spend the day worrying about how you look. Think about layering your outfit so you can control your temperature. Therefore, things like women'sscarves will be a practical accessory to add to your wardrobe as you can use it to control your temperature.

Purple Paisley Pashmina Shawl £15.00

You also need to make sure that you feel comfortable in how you look so choose an outfit that complements your figure so you look fab and of course if you look great you will feel great.

Accessorise with style

Here at MizEllie we always think that your accessories are just as important as the rest of your outfit, so make sure you think about things like your jewellery so you feel that the whole look is complete.  However, the key to your costume jewellery look is to keep it balanced so if you wear a statement pendant necklace wear stud earrings or if you want to go for some great chandelier style earrings keep your neckline bare. The idea is that you look chic and sophisticated but of course you can still have lots of fun with your jewellery.

Lariat Style Statement Necklace £18.00

Purple Ombre Teardrop Earrings £8.00

A lot of women feel pressure to wear a hat on the big day but only do so if you will feel comfortable wearing a hat. A great alternative could be a fascinator or hair brooch but ultimately wear what you feel best in.

At MizEllie we have a range of great women's scarves and costume and fashionjewellery which will be perfect for any fashionable mother of the bride to ensure she looks perfect for your daughter's big day.

Summer brights with MizEllie

With summer well and truly upon us now is the time to ditch the black and start wearing bright colours and this spring/summer neon is having something of a comeback.

This summer it is all about bright colours with neons adding a chic colourful twist to any outfit. In fact the spring/summer 2013 catwalks were split between pretty pastels and bright neons.  From hot pinks, to grass green, bright oranges and cobalt blue there were a number of bright creations on the catwalks.  In London Simone Rocha, Erdem, Matthew Williamson, Antonio Berardi and David Koma all had bright neon's at their runway shows while Versus, Ports 1961, Missoni and No 21 did the same in Milan. Proenza Schouler took the colour bandwagon in New York and Hussein Chalayan did the same in Paris.

Neon shades can add a fresh zing to any look and are perfect when the weather starts to heat up as they seem to go well with the holiday feel that summer brings as you don't want to wear dowdy black all summer do you?

But how do you wear neons? Well on the catwalks there was a lot of matchy, matchy head to toe looks which were bold and bright and made to be noticed. However, for a lot of people who are new to neon this may be a little bit too much as it may feel just too bright. This is wear you can pick your favourite neon colour and use it as an accent to your outfit. So a bright cobalt blouse would look great with a pair of black trousers or jeans or why not try a bright and bold zingy pencil skirt and pair it with a black or white blouse? It is also perfect to pair with another key summer trend the monochrome look as you can use a neon piece to offset your black and white outfit.

However, if this is even a little too bold for your tastes it doesn't mean you have to forgo the whole look instead inject some bright and bold neon tones into your outfit using accessories. A chic acid green or yellow clutch bag will brighten up the plainest LBD while neck scarves are the perfect summer accessory and can be as bright as you like. So a hot pink silk scarf worn with a white blouse, for example, will be bold enough to get noticed but not so bold that you feel self conscience.

Jewellery trends at the CFDA awards

We've been very spoilt with red carpet events in recent months with the latest being the CFDA awards. The annual fashion awards are a highlight of the fashion calendar and judging by the pictures this year is no difference. As is tradition at the CFDA awards those nominated for a gong attend the event on the arms of their favourite muse – so Zac Posen turned up with Juliette Lewis, Michael Kors arrived with Karolina Kurkova, Francisco Costa with Rooney Mara and Riccardo Tisci with Jessica Chastain. Of course those fashionable guests made sure they looked the part with fabulous outfits and accessories – so what key trends did we at MizEllie spot on the red carpet?

Simple chic jewellery

There has been a bit of a trend for big and bold statementjewellery on the red carpet in recent weeks with Katy Perry going to the Met ball wearing a crown but at the CFDA awards there seems to be a bit of a trend for paired down pieces. Rooney Mara turned up to the awards wearing a gorgeous Calvin Klein Collection dress and teamed it with a simple gold bracelet and ring.  While Miranda Kerr teamed her fab Proenza Schouler prom style dress with just some rings and a wavy designed pair of stud earrings. While Nicole Ritchie like Rooney Mara simply opted for simple bracelets for women to go with her gold gown.

Shiny Silver Clip On Drop Earrings £8.00

Diamonds are a girl's best friend – well at least on the red carpet!

Every fashionista worth her salt knows that when it comes to a red carpet appearance diamonds are always a good look. And it’s a look that Jordan Dunn took to heart as she added to her fierce Calvin Klein Collection jumpsuit with a fab diamond style chain necklace.  While we lusted after Alessandra Ambrosio's fab diamond drop earrings and diamond rings.

On The Fence Bracelet £8.00

Statement necklaces

While simple and chic was the order of the day for a lot of women attending the event there were also a couple of statement necklaces for women at the CFDA awards. Sofia Vergara wore an outstanding diamond and turquoise statement bib necklace while Joan Smalls wore a great collar with diamonds and jewels.

Turquoise and Silver Chunky Necklace  £16.00

Friendship bracelets

Friendship bracelets are also having a massive resurgence on the red carpet. For example Olivia Palermo wore a great selection of friendship bracelets but instead of looking young and cheap they looked chic and stylish and oh so fashionable.

Red Carpet Jewellery trends

As true fashion lovers here at MizEllie we love a red carpet appearance and we have been spoilt in the last few months with the Cannes film festival in full swing as well as the television BAFTAs. What's more there has been some gorgeous jewellery on display.  So what trends did we spot on the red carpet then? Here's MizEllies guide to the best jewels on display.

Diamonds Really are a Girl's Best Friend

At Cannes there is one jewellery trend that seems to have stood out and that is diamonds. It seems that bling was the order of the day at the French film festival. It model Cara Delevingne (we can always rely on Cara to pull off a fab red carpet look) teamed her sexy Burberry dress at the Great Gatsby premiere with diamond Chopard jewellery - from her statement diamond earrings, her diamond choker and floral design ring her jewellery added the perfect touch of bling but still looking ultra chic and glam. While the undisputed queen of this year’s Cannes festival - Carey Mulligan - attended the Great Gatsby premier wearing a stylish diamond bracelet and understated teardrop earrings.  For understated diamond jewellery you can’t go far wrong with taking inspiration from one Nicole Kidman who went to the Great Gatsby premiere in gorgeous diamond stud earrings.

And it wasn’t just Cannes where diamond fashion jewellery was on display at the BAFTA TV awards we saw Kimberley Wyatt wearing diamond jewellery with her BIBA dress. While Eastender’s actress Jessie Wallace opted for a chic diamond necklace for her appearance on the red carpet.

Treasure Chest Bangle £10

Faux Diamond Renaissance Bracelet £9.00

Statement Earrings

It seems the trend for statement jewellery has reached the red carpet as a number of stars at Cannes wore great statement earrings. Solange Knowles was seen wearing a cute pair of diamond ball shaped drop earrings. While Nicole Kidman went to the woman in film party wearing great statement gold earrings and Chinese actress Fan Bingbing wore gorgeous heart drop earrings for her red carpet appearance at the Jeune & Jollie premiere in Cannes. Even singer Lana Del Rey got in on the act at the Great Gatsby premiere with lust worthy chandelier earrings by Chopard.

Crystal Teardrop Pendant Stud Earrings  £8.00

Ear Cuffs

Well we can thank Emma Watson for this trend as she wore three diamond ear cuffs at the Bling Ring premiere in Cannes. The look was edgy but at the same time chic and glam and suited the young actress well.

Chunky Bracelets

From Made in Chelsea's Millie Macintosh's statement gold cuffs at the BAFTAs to Isla Fisher's bold, almost snake like, bracelets at Cannes - glam chunky bracelets are the order of the day on the red carpet and its a perfect look for anyone to copy this summer.

MizEllie's guide to dressing for the races

If there is one event that screams summer it has to be a day at the races. But what should you wear to the races? Here is MizEllie's guide to the best racing gear.

According to the Royal Ascot dress code women in the Royal enclosure, which is the poshest part of the course so to speak, should wear formal day wear. They should also wear skirt that come just to the knee or lower, while dress and top straps should be one inch or wider, while pashminas and jackets should also be worn topped off with a hat of course. While in the Grandstand women should also dress in a manner that befits a formal occasion. So what are MizEllie's tips for a perfect race day outfit?

Dress for the occasion

It's a good idea to dress on the more formal side so think the kind of outfit you would wear for a wedding. So a chic dress that comes to the knees and is quite formal will be perfect for the occasion. Or why not try a chic trouser or skirt suit? That way you will stand out for the right reasons and will still look utterly fab.

Don’t forget the scarves

A chic women's scarf could be your saviour at the races. At Ascot if you are in the Royal enclosure you are expected to wear a pashmina or jacket but when it is hot you won't want to wear a full on jacket so why not wear a gorgeous silkscarf as a pashmina. It will look stunning but also will be a good alternative to your jacket.

Purple Paisley Pashmina Shawl £15.00

Vivid Veridian Flowered Scarf £15.00

Have fun with your jewellery

At MizEllie we loved the outfits Princess Beatrice and Eugenie wore recently to the Epsom derby. They picked their outfits to match the occasion perfectly but still added personal touches with their fab costume jewellery. At MizEllie we loved Beatrice's fab statement gold cuff and lusted after Eugenie's subtle friendship bracelet. Or of course why not take inspiration from the Queen who as usual wore a stunning set of pearls proving you can still look glamorous whatever your age.
A slave to style cuff £4.00
Plaited Leather and Silver Tone Bracelet £10.00

Don't forget the hat

When it comes to going to the races it is all about your headgear so have some fun with your hat. Just make sure it suits your face shape but really the world is your oyster when it comes to your hat so go to town!

Summer jewellery trends with MizEllie

So we can finally say that summer is finally upon us and as the weather starts to warm up and the nights get longer it is time to start to thinking about the key summer jewellery trends. Well we at MizEllie like to look after you so here is our guide to some of the best summer jewellery trends – never let it be said that we don’t have your best interests at heart.

Statement jewellery

If there is one trend that defines this summer it has to be statement jewellery. When it comes to costume jewellery more is definitely more as big and bold is the order of the day. Not only was statement jewellery all over the spring/summer 2013 catwalks it is a trend embraced by some of our favourite celebs – take a leaf out of the ever stylish Nicole Kidman's book as she wore some gorgeous statement earrings for women to the Cannes film festival and they looked fab. While at the recent Met Ball Katy Perry even wore a bling worthy crown so take a tip from the celebs and rock some statement jewellery.
Make a Bold Statement Necklace £15.00

Elegant Black Marquise Cystal Stud Earrings £8.00

Layer it up

It's no longer enough to wear just one piece of jewellery at a time instead you need to think about layering up your pieces for a bold look. So an arm full of friendship bracelets or bangles will look bang on trend while stacked rings are also a key trend for the season.

Or why not look to the fashion movie of the year – the Great Gatsby? And wear layers of pearls for a chic 1920s style.

Coloured jewellery

Statement necklaces for women are one thing but for a totally fab look make sure your necklace or bracelets are coloured. At the Cannes film festival Isla Fisher accessorised her chic red Oscar da Renta gown with a stunning coloured statement necklace that added a chic yet fun look to her outfit. So when it comes to choosing some fab new jewellery look for bright colours for a chic summer look.

Festival Worthy Vintage Style Bracelet £10.00
Multi Colour Chunky Necklace £12.00

Monochrome

If bold coloured items aren't your style that doesn't mean you have to avoid statement pieces you can go to the other end of the spectrum and go monochrome.  Why not take some inspiration from the fierce looking Little Mix whose ultra fun Jessie wore amazing monochrome statement and costume jewellery at the recent American album event. So why not try some monochrome style?
