Great Gatsby Inspired Costume Jewellery

Great Gatsby Inspired Costume Jewellery

I don't know about you, but here at MizEllie we've been eagerly waiting for the release of the Great Gatsby. The Baz Luhrmann epic was set to be the big Christmas opening of 2012 until the studio pushed back its release date but the wait will soon be over as it's been announced that the 1920s drama will open this year's Cannes film festival.  So it won't be long before we will be able to feast our eyes on Carey Mullingan and Leonardo DiCaprio as Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby – and of course the fab fashion.

One thing is sure, and if the film stills are anything to by, it's set to be a sumptuous feast for the eyes with gorgeous fashions and costume jewellery on display. What's more 1920s style is having a bit of a resurgence at the moment what with the Great Gatsby on the way and the glorious Downton Abbey (I don't know about you but here at MizEllie we have serious wardrobe envy when it comes to Lady Mary's gorgeous gowns and jewellery).  It's also been a key look on the catwalks and is set to continue being a big trend – Chanel showcased styles with more than a nod to the 1920s at its recent Autumn/Winter catwalk show as did Armani and if it's good enough for them...

When it comes to jewellery the 1920s was all about costume and fashion jewellery as more and more people wanted to own beautiful pieces without having to pay a fortune for them.  One key look of the decade was the art deco movement which saw women wearing extravagant cocktail rings, long flapper-style necklaces and bracelets.

Because the 1920s were a decade when fashion trends underwent a revolution (out was the corsets and bustles of the pre-war world and in came elongated sporty looks) jewellery styles also changed, with shoulder-grazing earrings drawing attention to short bobs and gamine crops, while the dropped waists and low cut looks of the flapper style led to women wearing long rows of colourful beads and pearls, while bare arms and wrists meant that diamond, pearl (and cheaper imitations) bracelets and cuffs became increasingly popular all stacked together and jumbled together, while short crops and bobs were accessorised with gorgeous hair accessories.

When it comes to material - two key looks were diamond and pearls (or the costume jewellery equivalent). Pearl's in particular were incredibly popular post World War I so girls would wear heavy pearl strand necklaces and multi-strand bracelets in the gem.
