Key autumn/winter pattern trends

So the nights are drawing in and autumn is upon us, so it’s time to start thinking about what to wear this autumn/winter and one easy way of channelling the catwalk trends is looking at some of the key patterns available and incorporating them into your accessories (and one of the best ways of doing that is with women’s scarves). We at MizEllie always try to help you out so here is our rundown of some of the key pattern trends.

Dark florals

Florals are an ever present look on the catwalk and this autumn/winter is no exception. Except this time instead of ditzy and girly looks the season's look has a darker, more sombre mood. In fact the colour scheme of these florals is perfect for the autumn/winter months. Think burnt orange, reds and blacks for the perfect take on the look.

Lanvin, Mulberry, Givenchy, Mathew Williamson and Rodarte were just a few of the fashion houses to showcase the trend, with blooms coming in a variety of shapes and forms. So if you are going for this look either go for all out florals and let them do the talking by keeping your accessories to a minimum or embrace it with a few key pieces such as a fab women's scarf.

Checks and tartans

One trend that was massive on the autumn/winter catwalks was tartan and checks. From Stella McCartney, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton to Celine and 3.1 Phillip Lim (to name just a few!) tartans and plaids were everywhere. What's more, a lot of designers even paired checks and plaids together so it really is a look you can experiment and have fun with. However, if that all feels a bit much why not wear a few well-chosen accessories such as scarves for women.

Polka dots

This seems to be a trend that is not set to go anywhere not only was it on the catwalks (we were drooling over the polka dot neckscarves at Miu Miu) but it's all over the shops as well so for a great pattern you can't go far wrong with polka dots. Why not copy Miu Miu and go for a chic polka dot scarf for women?

Pretty in pink

When it comes to colour this season is all about pink with Celine, Miu Miu and Mulberry among those who showcased the look. It was all about pretty rose tones in coats and dresses and of course accessories so chuck on a great pink women's scarf with your winter coat and you will be ready for autumn/winter.

MizEllie’s guide to looking party ready

OK, I know there are still 13 weeks till Christmas (well 89 days if we are being exact!) but at MizEllie we have already had our first party invite for the festive season (I know we are social butterflies) and with the recent Emmys showing just how good red carpet chic can be, a lot of us are starting to think about that all important look for big nights out. In fact the celebs make it look effortless when they turn up to red carpet events but for us mere mortals it can seem like a daunting, not to mention expensive, task to dress for a big event – so I think we can be forgiven for panicking a little about our wardrobe choices.

However, according to new research from marketing firm Cream.UK it costs the average woman £323 to look ‘a million dollars’. This included the cost of a new dress, beauty treatments and of course those all-important accessories. So what should you do to make sure you look amazing before that big event?

Wear what suits you

OK we've said it before but it is so true – if you wear what suits your shape you will look a million dollars. Just look at Christina Hendricks and Sofia Vergara. They aren't stick thin celebs, instead they embrace their fab (not to mention sexy) womanly curves and dress to show them off on the catwalk. Because they are dressing for their hourglass frame and not what they are told to wear in some magazine they look amazing and as a result their knock out style is pretty much always on the best dressed lists after an event. So whatever your shape embrace it and wear what suits you, and when you turn up at that event you will look confident and sexy.

Jewellery, Jewellery, Jewellery
I know you are thinking that we would say that, but its true costume and fashion jewellery can be a lifesaver before a big event. How many times have you had an invite to a party and either don't have time or can't afford to buy a new dress? However, a fab piece of fashionjewellery can take your trusty LBD and make it look like a whole new outfit. This is particularly good if you have to go straight out after work as a great pendant necklace or earrings for women slip easily into your handbag and can take a work outfit from drab to fab instantly.

Shoes

It's also really important to pick the right pair of shoes as there is nothing worse than being stuck in a painful pair of shoes all night. So if you are going dancing put on your dancing shoes (ones that you know you can be comfortable in all night) and throw some flats into your handbag just in case. Whereas if you are going to dinner and going from the taxi to the restaurant you can wear your highest heels (as if you need an excuse!). Also think about the weather as if the pavement is going to be slippery you don't want to fall over so think about flats to walk home or when out and about.

Let's face it we don't have a celebrity budget (or all the freebies they get) but you can still look fab on a big night out without spending a fortune. At MizEllie we have a great range of costume fashion jewellery that is sure to get you in the party mood.

The top Emmy costume jewellery trends

Well we've been spoiled with another fabulous red carpet event and this time it’s the turn of some of the biggest TV stars who were out in force for the Emmys and there were some stunning looks on display from Clare Danes in her pink Armani PrivĂ© dress to Zooey Deschanel’s sexy J. Mendel Resort 2014 gown there were so many fab dresses on the red carpet. However, at MizEllie we of course are more interested in the jewellery on display so what have we learnt from the Emmy red carpet.

Chandelier earrings

There is something about the red carpet that just lends itself to bold earrings and this year's Emmys were no exception. From Sofia Vergara's stunning emerald drop earrings to Jane Fonda's 80s style earrings the red carpet was awash with stunning statement earrings that added more than a touch of glam to the proceedings.

Simple studs

At the other end of the spectrum there was also a real trend for simple yet elegant stud earrings. Clare Danes teamed her pretty pink gown with a faux bob hairstyle which showed off her paired down diamond studs. While simple they were the perfect addition to her pretty girly outfit.

However, it wasn't just Clare Danes who showed off a subtlety elegant look Supermodel Heidi Klum paired her plum sequined mermaid dress with some stunning ruby earrings.  And Scandal star, Kerry Washington, teamed her fairy tale gown with simple and elegant jewellery including some plain diamond studs.

Yellow gold

When it comes to metals the colour of choice seemed to be yellow gold with a host of celebs wearing the colour. Both Tina Fey and Amy Poehler wore gold tone earrings. But the award for best yellow gold jewellery has to go to Padma Lakshmi whose fab gold cuff and earrings were the perfect way of adding a bold touch to her pale blue dress – we loved.

Bangles

We spied a real trend for bangles on the red carpet with both Mad Men's Christina Hendricks and Elizabeth Moss wearing gorgeous gem stone bangles.  Kaley Cuoco, of Big Bang Theory fame, wore lust worthy gold bangles with black beaded details while Rose Byrne s wore a simple yet sophisticated silver piece.

Statement rings

There was also a big focus on ring with a number of actresses choosing to wear statement rings. Game of Throne's star Lena Headey was seen wearing a bold and edgy shark fin style ring. While New Girl star, Zooey Deschanel wore a Chanel tourmaline cocktail ring with her fab split dress.  The ring was the perfect accessory for Deschanel who is known for her red carpet manicures so the piece drew attention to her manicure. At MizEllie we also loved Sophia Vergara's amazing emerald ring which matched her earrings perfectly and cemented her bombshell status.

Of course at MizEllie we understand that not everyone has the budget of a TV a-lister so we have a range of fab costume and fashionjewellery which won't look out of place on the red carpet.

Winter tales: Getting the perfect winter wardrobe

Without being the bearer of bad news (please don't shoot the messenger or we at MizEllie won't be able to bring you fab fashion and costume jewellery or women's scarves) but winter isn't far off.  We're already in September and I don't know about you but we at MizEllie have noticed a distinct nip in the air in the last couple of years. So if the British seasons are anything to go by it could get quite wintery quite quickly so why not be prepared and start getting together a winter capsule wardrobe now?

The idea of a capsule wardrobe is that you have a few key pieces that work together and can take you through the winter with style. So what pieces should you look to invest in this year?

A coat
It may sound really obvious but a great coat is a winter must have. Ideally you will have a smarter one that can be worn for work etc and a waterproof one (unless you can find one that combines both which would be fab). If you already have a coat but want to give it a boost why not buy some fab costume jewellery? A great broach (or you could even sew on a stud earring or necklace) will really add a new touch to your coat without having to go to the expense of buying a new one.

However, if you are buying a new coat make sure you opt for one that suits you and is going to be fashionable in years to come so take time to find the perfect look.

Scarves, hats and gloves
Let's face it we live in Britain and our winters can get a bit cold so you are going to need layers. A fab pair of investment gloves (leather is always a great option but you may want something warmer when the temperatures drop), a warm snugly scarf and a winter hat will always be your best friends in winter. A great women's scarf is also a fab way of brightening up a dull winter coat (at MizEllie we love teaming up our black wool coat with a bright or animal print scarf so you are warm but stylish at the same time – what's not to love?)

Winter boots
A stylish waterproof pair of winter boats will be a life saver in winter. Something like a Chelsea boot is oh so in right now and can be dressed up or down so can go from the office to a night out and will keep your feet dry at the same time.

Thick tights
OK it's not an item of clothing as such but well tights are something of a wardrobe essential. If you are a skirt wearer you will know just how cold your legs can get in winter so you are going to need a good pair of thick tights (well you will probably need more than one pair but you know what we mean). They are also really handy under trousers if it gets really cold.

OK you can't get a coat from MizEllie but you can get some great women's scarves which don't cost the earth saving you some pennies towards that winter coat and those boots.

Getting the perfect Uni wardrobe with MizEllie

For many 18 year olds the next few weeks will be all about preparing to go to university and making the transition into the adult world.  For wannabe students moving to university can be a difficult time. Not only are they leaving home, they also have a unique opportunity to set out how they want their adult lives to be. Added into the mix is the whole stress of what to take with them as they often only have a carload and if they are anything like me cutting back a wardrobe is always a trial. So what should you think about when packing a wardrobe for uni?

Think about what you will be doing with your time
A lot of this will depend on your course. If it is practical course you will want comfortable hard wearing clothing, while for something like an arts course you might want to be a bit more unique. Don’t forget the social side as well, so you will need things like going out items and maybe even something suitable for a ball as some universities will have a fresher’s ball. You will also need some more practical items that you can wear for daytime Fresher’s activities.

You have to think about what you will do in your spare time, so if you are gym bunny take appropriate clothes or you will regret it. Also remember you are not going to spend all your time ironing and taking care of your clothes so think about how easy they are to look after.

Don’t forget the weather

Whether you like it or not your first semester will be in winter so don’t forget a practical yet stylish coat and women’s scarves as well as a hat and gloves or risk getting ill.

Find your style and stick to it
Another often overlooked point is to stick to your own personal style. There is no point trying to be a clone of anyone else as you simply won’t feel comfortable in your own skin and then won’t look good, so find your style and own your look.

Pack a capsule wardrobe
Another important idea is to think about a capsule wardrobe, so you want a few key pieces that work well together and can be mixed up to form lots of different outfits. Let’s face it you will probably only get to wear one ball dress but at the same time you probably won’t get far with 10 pairs of jeans and no tops so think about how many outfits you can get from your wardrobe.  It’s also going to be cheaper that way so you won’t have to spend all your loan cheque on clothes.

Don’t forget the accessories
A good way of mixing up your capsule wardrobe is with chic accessories. Things like fab costume and fashion jewellery and silk scarves can be worn in a number of ways and don’t take up too much room in your car.
