Trendspotting: Are Polka Dots the New Black?

Polka dots have become the go-to look in many women's fashion palettes, which is a trend we heartily encourage.  One great thing about polka dots in fashion is they essentially act like neutrals; they don’t demand a full commitment to a graphic theme the way other patterns do. In their simplicity, they can even work with other designs without seeming to clash. And a small dot pattern blends together, appearing almost like a solid colour, without being boring. Polka dots add interest and fun to all kinds of outfits.
Plus we’re spotting the spots on numerous celebs, like Jessica Alba, Nicky Hilton and Heidi Klum (a shoutout to Fabsugar for the pics). We’re seeing them rocking polka dots at fancy events, business meetings and even just dashing off to the gym.

A good way to touch on this trend is by adding a polka dot scarf or bag to your wardrobe. We’ve seen some great versions from fashion designers this spring – ranging from the pricey to the outrageous.

Left to right, we have polka dot scarves by Saldarina for Bloomingdales ($98), Marc Jacobs ($290), and style icon Sonia Rykiel ($32,000 – yes, you read that right!) Followed by Lulu Guiness’ polka dot bag ($545) and Valentino’s red polka dot clutch ($,1685). But for those of us without unlimited funds to indulge in a bit of polka dot whimsy, there are lots of alternative ways to get the look. And since we love polka dots at MizEllie, we’re happy to share our much more affordable versions!
